A domain is stuck

What each domain status means, the sentences a domain shows, and when to press Check again.

Updated

Each domain on the Domains page has a status chip, and when something is wrong, one sentence in red on its card and at the top of its Show DNS records dialog. Start from the chip.

What the status means

StatusWhat Cloud is doingHow long it tries
Waiting for DNSThe domain was added and its first check has not run.The first check runs within a minute.
Checking DNSCloud is looking up the records. For your own domain it wants the TXT record and address records exactly as Show DNS records lists them.Every five minutes, up to 12 times: about an hour.
Preparing HTTPSDNS is right, and Cloud is waiting for the certificate. The first three looks are a minute apart, then every five minutes, up to 12 in all.
HTTPS activeThe domain serves your service over HTTPS. Cloud watches the certificate and checks its renewal.Until you remove the domain.
DNS needs attentionDNS checks ran out.Never again on its own: press Check again.
HTTPS needs attentionThe certificate did not arrive, or a renewal failed and the certificate expired.Never again on its own: press Check again.

While a deployment of the service runs, checks wait and resume after it.

A failed domain is not checked again on its own

Once a domain reads DNS needs attention or HTTPS needs attention, Cloud stops checking it. After you correct the records, press Check again, the icon button on the domain's card, which starts a fresh round of checks. Pressing it while a domain is still being checked changes nothing.
